EU countries’ foreign affairs and defence committee chairs will be meeting in Helsinki

Chairs of the foreign affairs and defence committees of EU countries’ parliaments will meet in Helsinki on 5 and 6 September 2019. The meeting is part of the inter-parliamentary programme of Finland’s EU Presidency.

The application period for the media accreditation has ended but the sessions will be broadcast live on parleu2019.fi in original language and in English.

Topics at the meeting will include the development of the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defence Policy of the EU, security situation in the Baltic Sea region and the Arctic, effects of climate change on security policy, transatlantic relations, hybrid threats and political developments in Western Balkans. 

Speakers at the meeting will include Sauli Niinistö, President of Finland; Carl Bildt, former Prime Minister of Sweden; and Esa Pulkkinen, Director General of the EU Military Staff.

The meeting will be arranged by the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committees of the Finnish Parliament.
